What is meditation?
It generally means “focusing on one thing” however, deep meditation pertains to the act of shutting out the outside world and going deep within yourself in order to find peace and calm, to balance your energies, to heal your body, mind, and spirit, and to connect with the divine.
Meditation has been practiced for centuries and provides a way for us to get in touch with our inner self as well as our higher self. As one meditates more and more, one discovers more about one’s self and is able to achieve a deep and profound sense of relaxation. If you are trying meditation for the first time just relax and don’t over think things.
First find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. I recommend a sitting position for beginners, to enable the beginner remain fully conscious of the entire duration of the meditation. Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Position yourself preferably on a mat on the floor with your back supported against a wall or some kind ofย strong support. The first thing you want to focus on is your breathing. Practice taking deep full breaths even before you start meditation to enable yourself become familiar with different breathing techniques.
Make sure your space is clean and comfortable. Burn some herbs, incense, or use a diffuser and essential oils to set the mood for your meditation. You may also hold your favourite crystal or surround yourself with preferred crystals during your meditation. Don’t worry if you don’t have any of these items you can still meditate in your clean and cosy space. Meditation music is also highly recommended.
As a beginner, the first thing you are training your mind to do is to simply BE. Your goal is to calm your mind as much as possible without focusing on anything in particular except your breath. Breathe deeply in and out. And try different breathing techniques to help you relax. One good technique to try is breathing in through your nose and then out through your mouth. Take a deep full breath in through your nose and hold it for about 5 seconds then release the breath slowly through.your mouth. As you release your breath, imagine releasing everything that no longer serves you. Breathe in goodness, positivity and fresh new opportunities. Breathe out everything negative and everything that does not serve your highest good.
Meditate as often as you wish, though there may be particular times of day that you might find special and optimal for a meditation session. My favourite time to meditate is at dawn.
The more you meditate and practice stillness, the more relaxed you will feel and the deeper into yourself you can go. During your meditations close your eyes, breathe, and let go of all thoughts that may be clouding your mind. At first it may be difficult to stay focused only on your breathing for an extended period. It’s OK. Let the thoughts flow through your mind then release them. Then come back to focus on your breathing and just being here and now. As you practice you will find that you will be able to meditate for longer and longer periods without losing focus. For now, go easy on yourself and take it one day at a time.
